New Delhi: The government on Tuesday prolonged the deadline for filing income tax returns (ITR) for the assessment year 2019-20 to August 31, 2019, for the types of taxpayers for whom the earlier deadline became July 31, 2019. This extension is a much-needed comfort as taxpayers have been dealing with multiple issues in submitting ITR due to elements like the delay in issuance of Form sixteen and ITR bureaucracy changes.
Worth mentioning here is that many tax practitioners appealed to the authorities to increase the ITR submission cut-off date to offer taxpayers enough time to report ITR properly. Tax professionals say this cut-off date extension is relevant for all taxpayers whose bills aren’t required to be audited using a chartered accountant. “All businesses, partnership enterprises, co-operative societies, whose turnover is more than Rs 1 crore, are required to get their bills audited using a chartered accountant,” said tax and funding expert Balwant Jain.
However, there are certain exceptions to this rule, which Jain introduced. For the above-cited entities, the last date to record ITR for the economic year 2018-19 is September 30. For character taxpayers and HUFs, the cut-off date now stands at August 31, regarding the preceding deadline of July 31. This year, CBDT extended the deadline for employers to report their TDS returns to June 30 from May 31 due to this closing date for issuing Form 16 to personnel, which was additionally prolonged from June 15, 2019, to July 31, 2019. Consequently, personnel were given much less than one month (after receiving their Form 16) to report their ITR.
