A Man Offering Gold and Coins to a Girl, c 1665-70, through Godfried Schalcken
A candle within the dark casts a disreputable light on this erotic painting from the Dutch golden age. Its heat glow glints on the fee a person is presenting a girl in what appears to be an ornately decorated brothel, with a pleasant carving of the love god Cupid. It’s all very sinful, and the painting’s motive is as ambiguous as that flickering flame. Is it a moral caution? If so, nothing punitive appears to be occurring to the prostitute or her client. So possibly this is meant surely to excite middle-magnificence Dutch connoisseurs. The nineteenth-century Irish writer Sheridan Le Fanu noticed a third which means in Schalcken’s shadows. In his story Schalcken the Painter, he imagines a horrific stumble upon with intercourse, loss of life and the supernatural that left this curious artist mentally scarred.
